Friends of the Fish Hatchery
Looking For Fishy Friends
Iron River, WI - A short six mile drive north of Iron River, through hay fields and forests, brings you to The Iron River National Fish Hatchery. Located on 1200 pristine acres on the edge of the Chequamegon National Forest, the Hatchery is home to over a million Coaster Brook Trout and Lake Trout ranging from eggs to adults which are used to stock local rivers and the Great Lakes. The surrounding 1200 acres provides over 4000 gallons of water per minute from springs and streams for habitat in the Hatchery. In addition to this state of the art facility, the area is home to a diverse group of habitats supporting innumerable plants, amphibians, mammals and birds. A skier or hiker might spy white tail deer, owl prints in the fresh snow, water cress floating in the river or grouse clucking in the brush.
The Iron River National Fish Hatchery is looking for a few Friends to assist in re-establishing the "Friends of the Fish Hatchery". The "Friends" is a non-profit, grass roots volunteer organization formed to promote and facilitate community-wide programs and events and to educate the public about the Hatchery. They seek to establish a living resource advocating the uniqueness and sustaining the heritage of the Northern Great Lakes Region. By actively promoting, planning, aiding, and assisting management at the hatchery, the Friends will help to provide relevant information to promote effective decision making on issues affecting the Hatchery and use of the surrounding 1200 acres.
If you are interested in joining the Board of Directors or just becoming a Friend of the Hatchery contact Dale Bast at the Hatchery at 715-372-8510 or by email dale_bast@fws.gov. Membership is open to the public, and your membership will help support the Friends efforts.
An organizational meeting is being held on March 29, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fish Hatchery.
