Bayfield County Health Department

Health's New Home

The Bayfield County Health Department offices have moved. We're located in the County Annex Building, just across the street from the courthouse. The entrance to the Health Department is at the west end of the building off of First Avenue East (opposite end from the Sheriff's Department).

Dietary Guidelines for Americans

The latest version of the government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans was released in January. Based on the newest scientific research, the guidelines make specific recommendations about a healthy lifestyle. We are encouraged to eat five-and-a-half cups of fruits and vegetables and to maintain weight loss, exercise 90 minutes a day. Before grabbing the remote and a bag of chips, and giving up on ever being able to achieve these goals, don't panic. Let the new guidelines inspire you, not intimidate you. If you change a few things, positive health benefits can occur.

Here are a few areas to consider:

  • Fruits and Vegetables: Choose a variety every day, trying to increase from what you eat now to five-and-a-half cups a day; the more colorful, the better to get important vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.
  • Whole Grains: If you're a white bread only eater, try increasing whole grains, such as brown rice or a cereal with a whole grain as the first ingredient; aim for half of your grains to be whole.
  • Calcium: Assure 3 servings of low fat calcium rich dairy products daily; choose skim or one-percent milk.
  • Fats: Keep overall fat content of your diet low by choosing lean meat and fat free dairy products, limiting saturated and "trans" fats, and having most of the fat coming from polyunsaturated or monounsaturated sources. This means more fish, nuts, and vegetable oils.
  • Physical Activity: Regular physical activity promotes health, psychological well being, and a healthy weight.
    • 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity reduces the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes
    • 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily can help achieve weight loss, and prevent the typical gradual weight gain with aging
    • 60-90 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity daily will maintain weight loss
