2002 Lake Superior Shoreline Imagery Information

In the Fall of 2002, The Bayfield County government, with the financial assistance of the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, conducted a study to document the condition of the Lake Superior shoreline. Close-range oblique photographs were acquired using a low-flying aircraft, producing a comprehensive visual library of images for the entire shoreline. This set of photographs provides a baseline for observing changes over time, whether from natural forces such as erosion, or from

development. The archive also provides a ready source of imagery that can useful for land use planning efforts, public meetings, educational displays, and a multitude of other shoreline-related issues and events. We encourage you to browse the library and use the images as you like.

While summertime may have produced particularly beautiful images of shoreline, these photographs were purposefully taken in November when the leaves had fallen from the trees, allowing more of the underlying terrain to be visible. Some of the northern-most reaches of shoreline have a slight dusting of snow which improves the contrast in shaded areas.

Downloading Image Files

Users may download full resolution JPG image files of any oblique shoreline image by clicking the Download link within ShoreViewer.  Files are delivered as zip files which may be decompressed using a program such as WinZip or PowerDesk Express.  Please be aware that the files average 1.6 Mb and may take awhile to download.

Bayfield County would like to thank the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians for their assistance in acquiring the photographic images. The photos were obtained using a Nikon D100 digital camera, with image resolutions of 3000x2000. The location of each photo was established using GPS linked directly to the camera. A small amount of overlap exists from photo-to-photo to provide continuous coverage of the entire shoreline. A total of 513 images were acquired, from the mouth of Fish Creek to the mouth of the Brule River.
