Memorial Day approaches we are completing installation of flag holders in the Washburn Cemetery. All veteran’s graves in the County will be marked with a Veteran flag holder. If you note that a Veterans marker does not have a flag holder please let the cemetery sexton or my office knows so we can plan for next year.

I would like to remind Veteran’s that enrollment in the VA Health Care System is still one of the best benefits that you can sign up for. Most of you are aware that there is still a limiting factor for enrollment based on income. Single Veterans making over $30,750 or a married veteran with a joint income of over $35,100 may place the Veteran in the Priority 8 category. Priority 8 veterans are enrolled by not seen for VA health services. See listing of priorities at the following link http://www.va.gov/healtheligibility/Library/pubs/EPG/EnrollmentPriorityGroups.pdf.

That being said there are exceptions to the income rule and Veteran’s that served in Vietnam, have a service connected disability, are on VA Pension, were a POW, or have a Purple Heart do not have to provide income information for enrollment. Because enrollment is based on individual records Veterans should apply for health care with a 10-10EZ application and see what priority they receive rather than just saying I won’t qualify.

The VA Clinic in Hayward

The Clinic has been open since March 4 and is staffed with VA employees and run directly by the VA Minneapolis Medical Center. Dr. Koopminer, Director of all Outpatient clinics for VISN23 (North Dakota, Minnesota and Western Wisconsin) recently spoke at our annual post commanders dinner and states that the clinics in Rice Lake and Hayward continues to grow in patients numbers and that he will expand operations to 3 days a week in Hayward when demand calls for the increased scheduling.

Wisconsin GI Bill

The new Wisconsin GI Bill offered 100% remission of tuition and fees began in the 2007 Fall Semester. Veterans should be taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Remember then is no delimiting date like the GI Bill so veteran that have been out over 10 years are still eligible. It has never been a better time for Veterans to get their schooling or retraining completed.

In closing, as always "Veterans, thank you for serving."
