Dog Sled Trail Information
December 10
We have received over 36" of snow in the past week! For a few days, that will mean soft trails and difficulty parking, but Butterfield Road at Star Route (the Star Route Crossing) should be plowed out to park by today. No report on plowed roads for the winter yet. If you come onto a plowed logging road or town road that is normally a trail, it is plowed for active logging, so do not run on it, not even for a little while! Logging trucks pose probably the greatest safety threat to mushers as they are large and cannot always stop quickly. They haul logs at night, on Sundays, anytime! This weekend should see some trails being packed. The Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race Trail is likely wet at the starting end, so it is not going to be groomed for a couple weeks. The numbered National Forest roads south of Cornucopia make excellent training trails this time of year, but may be a little hard to park on due to all the snow. #236, Brinks Road, is paved and plowed every year. Bring a shovel and make yourself a spot off 236 to park and run on the unplowed roads nearby. Do not block any roads with your rig! Also, they are logging in some areas, so avoid any plowed roads for running or parking.
