02/04/2012 - 17th Annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race

17th annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race features an 8-dog, 80-mile race and a 6-dog, 60-mile race and also includes a Sportman's Race and a Family Race, as well as a warming tent, concessions, bonfire and "Meet the Mushers" Dinner. Just north of Bayfield. Races start at 10 a.m.

02/04/2012 - Mt. Ashwabay Summit Ski Race

This is a bunch of Nordic ski races we have for all abilities and ages. For adults there are 3 races: a 19km Pursuit Race, an 8km Classic Race, and an 11km Skate Race. For Youth we have a 3.5 km Freestyle race (geared toward middle school and high school racers), and an informal sprint relay. For those 8 and under we have a .5 km race (not timed).

The Mt. Ashwabay Summit Ski Race offers a 3.5k youth, 19k adult pursuit race (this is worldcup style, transition area to switch skis and poles), 8k adult classic, 11k adult skate, and 0.5k kids (8 and under) fun race. All races start and finish at the Mt. Ashwabay Chalet. Classic and skating lanes are provided throughout the skate courses. Middle School and High School racers are encouraged to do the 3.5k race. All awards are edible, think pie!

02/04/2012 - Winter Animal Tracking: Part II - Field Trip

Meet at the Cable Natural History Museum from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. for the second half of Winter Animal Tracking. Participants will carpool to areas within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in search of animal tracks such as: wolf, coyote, fox, fisher, bobcat, elk, and deer. Depending on the snow depth and location of tracks, tracking may be done on snowshoes over uneven terrain. A limited number of adult snowshoes are available for use from the Cable Natural History Museum for $4/adult pair. Participants must provide their own bag lunch. Dress accordingly for the weather. Registration is concurrent with Winter Animal Tracking: Part I.

While touring the collections room or exhibits, have you ever wondered how those specimens got there? How do you take a dead animal and make it come to life again? Stop by the Cable Natural History Museum to watch Naturalist Katie Connolly as she prepares specimens for the collections, from taxidermy to bone preservation and everything in between! This informal program allows you to watch real specimen preparation as it happens. Stop by to observe any time between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month in the Museum Classroom.

Scandinavian loop weaving is a simple and durable technique that uses no thread or looms, and turns trash into treasure! Bring old bed sheets or other fabric that can be easily torn into strips, and a pair of sharp scissors. Two or three sheets will make a ~2'x4' rug. Some extra materials will be on hand. Have you ever found yourself cleaning out the attic, running into that ancient Prom dress, and thinking to yourself, 'If I could only wear this one more time'? Well, now you can at the Blue Moon Ball. This isn't just any old ball; this is a black tie and vintage dress prom for adults! If prom dresses aren't your style, you can wear any sort of crazy costume you wish! Trophies are given for various categories including: best 'blue' couple, best dancers, and best vintage apparel, to name a few. And of course, there's the crowning of the King and Queen of the Ball.

Come and dance to the sounds of the 20-piece 'Big Woods Big Band' at the beautifully restored, historic Bayfield Lakeside Pavilion, located on the frozen shore of Lake Superior.

Are you looking for a fun activity to do with the family before the big 'Birkie' race? The Cable Natural History Museum has partnered with the American Birkebeiner Foundation for a one mile leisurely snowshoe hike in the peaceful winter woods. Learn about winter wildlife and tracking and experience the Northwoods on snowshoes. Meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 10:00 a.m. and return by noon. A limited number of adult and children's snowshoes are available for use from the Museum for $2/child pair and $4/adult pair. Registration is required by Feb. 23 by calling 715-798-3890. The program will not occur if the temperature is below 5° F. Donations accepted.

Come join the fun at this year's Camp Birkie for Kids! Children in Kindergarten through 6th grade can participate in this day-long environmental education camp sponsored by the Conserve School of Land O'Lakes, WI, in partnership with the American Birkebeiner Foundation and the Cable Natural History Museum. The 19th annual 'Run on Water' is a family fun event open to people of all ages and skill levels. Participants can choose to run, walk, ski, snowshoe, skate or even bike the 5-mile course on the famous 'ice road' across frozen Lake Superior from Bayfield to Madeline Island and back.

Registration begins at the Bayfield pavilion at 10:00 am. The race begins at 11:00 am. Snowshoe and ski rentals available and tech support for bikers. If there is no ice road this event will be cancelled.

The Run on Water is part of the Bayfield Winter Festival, a fundraising event for the Friends of the Recreation Center and the Bayfield Area Recreation Center. Weave a beautiful Jeremiah basket in just a day at the Cable Natural History Museum! Materials and instruction are provided by Margaret Stone. Registration is limited. A pot of venison chili and tableware will be provided for lunch, bring a dish to share for this creative and social day at the Museum. 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Cost is $25/member, $30/non-member.
