Revised Floodplain Maps
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has released updated flood plain maps for Bayfield County. The maps utilize updated mapping data to reassess areas subject to flooding. Bayfield County Land Records Administrator, Scott Galetka report that within the old designated floodplain areas, there were 804 buildings that intersected with the floodplain. Out of that 804, 622 have been taken out of the floodplain with the new maps. There are currently 299 buildings in the new floodplain countywide. Of those 299, 117 are new, as in they were not previously in a floodplain. Several of these are around the two leverage studies on the Eau Claire chain of lakes and Namekagon Lake; only 3 are along the Lake Superior shoreline.
Properties in designated flood plains are subject to increased restrictions and insurance costs. For more information on designated areas go to http://msc.fema.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/FemaWelcomeView?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1
