Register of Deeds
NOTICE:
Effective June 25, 2010 the cost to record a real estate document in the Register of Deeds office will be $30 regardless of the number of pages.
Governor Doyle signed SB 507 into law on May 12, 2010. This legislation changes the recording fee structure for real estate documents filed with the county Register of Deeds and directs the Register of Deeds to redact social security numbers from electronic format records that are viewable or accessible on the internet.
What We Do
The Register of Deeds handles the filing of many documents. Some of the most common are:
- Deeds
- Federal Tax Liens
- Mortgages and Satisfactions
- Articles of Incorporation
- Plats and Certified Survey Maps
- Financing Statements
We also file Vital Statistics Records such as birth and death certificates, marriage licenses and veteran's discharges.

Acceptable forms of identification are:
One of these:
Wisconsin driver's license
Wisconsin Photo ID
Out-of-State driver's license or photo ID card
OR
Two of these:
Government issued employee ID card or badge with photo
US Passport
Check or bank book
Major credit card
Health insurance card
Recent dated, signed lease
Recent utility bill or traffic ticket
Expired cards or documents are not accepted
There is no fee for veterans' records to the veteran. All fees are subject to change without notice.
A Note to Genealogists
Bayfield County Vital Statistic records date back as far as the late 1870's for births, late 1800's for deaths and the mid-1800's for marriages.
Census, naturalization, and other records can be found at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, Wisconsin. Their archival records represent collections from nine counties in northern Wisconsin.
