Weekly Beach Report

Beach monitoring is done through the Memorial-Labor Day season at all beaches on Lake Superior. See detailed conditions at the link below and at

According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) criteria, a BEACH ADVISORY is issued at 235 MPN and a BEACH CLOSURE at 1,000 MPN or above. Water sampling is done either once or twice per week depending on the beaches location and popularity.

All beaches would be CLOSED under the following conditions:

  • Whenever a human health hazard exists as determined by the local health department.
  • After a major pollution event where potential exists that indicator levels may be expected to exceed a standard.
  • After a significant rainfall event that is determined to impact the beach area.
  • If the level of E. coli in the beach water sample exceeds 1,000 MPN.
