  1. Lost Arts Symposium

April 12, 2017, All Day @ Lost Creek School for Self-Reliance & Folk Arts

The School For Self-Reliance presents our annual symposium featuring traditional folk and outdoor skill workshops meant to inspire us to live an enjoyable and self-sufficient life. Whether you find yourself in a survival situation or are trying to build a house, the symposium is a great way to gain knowledge and connect with others with similar interests. How is the symposium unique? Instead of offering workshops as stand-alone classes the symposium was created to join forces and offer several classes all at once. In this way participants and instructors benefit from the"culture of learning". You can choose to wander around and see what other classes are doing, or focus on just one subject, it's up to you! Join us for a weekend of fun, sharing, and learning.

  2. Viking Era Woodcarving - With master carver Jay Haavik

    April 12, 2017 - April 16, 2017 @ Just outside Washburn, WI.

With master carver, Jay Haavik The 1904 excavation in Norway of the Oseberg Viking ship revealed a vast array of woodcarvings, unlike anything seen previously. Dragon like headposts, elaborately carved sleighs, an exquisite wagon, and of course, the carvings on the ship itself revealed to us the extent of the imagination and skill for the woodcarvers in the 9th century region of Vestfold, Norway. This five day workshop will be an opportunity of beginning as well as experienced carvers to experience the pleasure of making carvings inspired by the Viking age. Tuition: $400 plus some materials and tools you will need to purchase.
